Top 10 songs of 2023

Writer: Samuel BerrillSamuel Berrill

Despite being a few weeks into 2024 I thought I'd take a look at my top 10 favourite songs of 2023:

Honourable mentions:

Let The Light In - Lana Del Rey feat. Father John Misty

Will Anybody Ever Love Me - Sufjan Stevens

Hello Love - Jessie Ware

So Right - Carly Rae Jepsen

Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!? - McKinley Dixon

10. Deep End (Paul's in Pieces) - The National:

A melancholic diamond in the rough that is The National's latest 2 LPs, Deep Ends  propelling drums, guitar work, and chorus bring with it a wave of nostalgia for the good old days of National bangers.

9. Time - Nico Paulo:

A beautiful folk track with a calm and warming vibe. Been stuck in my head for ages.

8. Silver Girl - Spoon:

As my #1 artist for 2023 it's fitting Spoon make an appearance. Despite being a b side to their 2022 album 'Lucifer on the sofa', Silver Girl offers a more lo fi yet just as impactful sound.

7. Made to Parade - Queens of the Stone Age

From an underrated 8th LP, Made to Parade exudes the swagger that QOTSA continue to display 25 years into their career.

6. You First (Remix: Remi Wolf) - Paramore, Remi Wolf:

A late discovery with a potential dose of recency bias, however the ethereal harmonies from Remi Wolf and Hayley Williams are undeniable. Great rework of the original track from Paramores 'This is why' record.

5. Flexorcist - The Voidz:

Despite their lack of output in 2023, The Voidz latest single packs the groove and killer chorus a Voidz song often provides, hopefully more to come in 2024🤞

4. Public Grieving - The Armed:

Immaculate vibes and musical passages in an excellent closing track to one of the most underrated records of the year - 'Perfect Saviours', musicianship on this is chefs kiss.

3. I Believe - Caroline Polachek:

Arguably the best album of the year, 'Desire I want to turn into you' not only showcases Caroline's unparalleled vocal range and control throughout but also her ability to create catchy alt pop bangers in 'I Believe'

2. Not Strong Enough - Boygenius:

Amazing verses and a beautiful chorus that boasts all 3 members talent. Anthemic bliss.

1. 3D Country (Title track) - Geese:

Favourite discovery of 2023, Geese's 3D Country encapsulates the bands refreshing/organic take on the alt rock genre, featuring impressive vocal leads from Cameron Winter, musical breakdowns and an awesome solo at the end.
